Asbestos/MesotheliomaAsbestos refers to a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Each exposure to asbestos dust increases the risk of developing an asbestos disease such as Mesothelioma. A majority of asbestos claims involve people who work directly with products containing asbestos or workers in the vicinity of the job site where asbestos dust is created. Most cases of asbestosis or Mesothelioma occur 10 years or more after the first exposure to asbestos dust. What is MesotheliomaMesothelioma is a rare cancer of the lining of the chest and abdomen. It may also be linked to cancer of the stomach, intestines, and rectum. Malignant Mesothelioma is often diagnosed in people over 50. There are three main types of Mesothelioma, pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial. Pericardial, which is very rare, starts in the heart. Peritoneal accounts for about 10-20 percent of Mesothelioma and starts in the abdomen. Pleural starts in the chest cavity and accounts for 75 percent of most cases.
